Too many students don’t understand how to read music until they reach college. Music, like any language needs to be learned, practiced, relearned, reinforced, etc. etc. Imagine all of the little prodigies we’d have running around if parents and teachers would take music seriously and help teach it like they do spelling or reading a book? The drop out rates from beginning band to 8th grade is astonishing enough as it is, but I always hate to wonder how much of that is caused by a constant feeling of defeat.
